But that rethink must be grounded in an accurate context for the larger changes affecting us. We’ll explore the new world of modern learning and offer a lens through which we can hold relevant conversations around change moving forward.

Learning Through Creation: The Power of Making Stop Action Videos on the iPad

In the high school biology classroom, students have historically benefitted from viewing animations when learning complex biochemical and physiological processes. With iPad and an app for making stop action videos, students can now learn these processes by making these animations themselves. This instructional method is a powerful teaching tool that is transferable to all STEM disciplines. By making simple animations from scratch, students confirm their understanding in a fun and creative way. Furthermore, students benefit from developing their collaboration, research, and problem solving skills through a creative endeavor. Ultimately, making these videos allows students to learn and retain the concepts better than if they were to learn these processes using a traditional lecture. Participants will learn how to use the apps effectively and efficiently, how to motivate the students, and how to assess the final product. We will discuss the conflicting goals of content versus creativity, and explore ways in which stop action video making can be used in all disciplines. Participants are encouraged to download iStopMotion to their iOS device prior to the session.

Education experts and reformers from across the political spectrum agree that personalization is a powerful strategy for accelerating student learning, and that technology has tremendous potential to support personalization. However, these experts and reformers also frequently disagree about what personalization actually means. In this interactive session, we'll explore four faces of personalization - four different ways that educators interpret "personalization" that have different, and sometimes incompatible, implications for student learning. Changing students' classroom experiences begins with changing teachers' practices. Yet as soon as teachers and administrators offer Professional Development, we typically ask teachers to Sit and Get our messages about the importance of avoiding Sit and Get strategies in our own classrooms! This session will explore ways to develop a differentiated PD model, one that recognizes the need to accommodate a wide range of teachers' learning styles and to support your facultyÕs varying skills and experience with technology integration. We will examine several facets of these ÒblendedÓ PD programs (continuing education models which provide synchronous and asynchronous support). At the heart of blended and differentiated PD is the assumption that teaching and learning, and not the technology itself, must form the core of all of our continuing education programming and that meaningful technology integration requires far more than dressing up the factory model wolf in digital sheepÕs clothing. Participants will leave the session with numerous practical examples of blended and differentiated PD models as well as with a wealth of suggestions about how to begin transforming PD organically and/or District-wide at home.

60 Days of Google Glass in the Class: My Adventures with Wearable Technology

Come see what the future of education could look like through Google Glass. If you attend this session, I will share with you the first 60 days of ‚Äúglass in my class." Google Glass has changed the look, sound, and shape of knowledge in my 21st century classroom. I will show how Google Glass and Augmented Reality paired up early on and how that collaboration redefined the classroom as well as how Glass allowed me to differentiate the learning process when combined with tools like Evernote, Voice Memo, and Google Search. Some of the adventures that I will share include our use of the Google Glasses for 1) Google Hangouts 2) APP-Smashing Projects and 3) a new perspective on movie making in the classroom. Also, I will discuss how this tool helped me refine my own practice as an educator. No longer I am teaching in a 1 to 1 environment with just iPads but my classroom is a 1+1 with iPads happily paired up with the Google Glasses. Digital Citizenship: A Whole-Community Approach

Kids today grow up in a digital world with potential for communication, collaboration, and creation, and yet schools face challenges with ethical issues that arise from studentsÕ use of technology, such as cyberbullying, inappropriate sharing, and plagiarism. In this session, learn about three factors schools can use to create a positive culture around digital citizenship, with a focus on iPad classrooms. First, learn about how to teach students digital citizenship skills, covering eight key topics and including a free Digital Literacy & Citizenship curriculum developed in partnership with Howard Gardner and the GoodPlay Project at Harvard as well as Digital Passport, a learning game for upper elementary students. Next, learn how to engage and inform parents about managing their childrenÕs technology use and helping kids make smart choices. Finally, hear about strategies schools have used to educate teachers about digital citizenship, moving away from the lone teacher who is responsible, to a more cross-curricular and cross-faculty approach that helps build capacity and community in schools. Empowering Student Writers

Using technology to teach writing isn√ït about using the newest app. Instead, it is about how writing teachers can leverage the opportunities offered by 2.0 tech tools to empower our student writers. This session will focus on how building choice, connections, and mentors into writing assignments can help students reflect on their developing skills as writers. Participants in this session will have an opportunity to see how collaborative 2.0 tools like Twitter and Google Apps helped high school English students to write and share their research projects with real audiences beyond the walls of their classroom. When students have both purpose and audience for their writing endeavors, magic can happen! DigiLit: Book Clubs for a 21st Century Classroom

A class set of novels, binders, poster boards, and enough post-it notes to wallpaper a school‚Ä¶. These are just a few of the supplies needed to run a traditional middle school book club. With the addition of iPads, Google Apps, and other educational technologies, the age of the ‚Äútraditional‚Äù book club requires change. Presented by a technology integration coach/science teacher and a reading specialist/ language arts teacher, this session will walk you through the setup and process of creating a digital book club system for your classroom. Following the SAMR Model, we will cover the basic steps of substitution using Google Apps and a teacher website, while also aiming to ‚Äúteach above the line‚Äù by using apps like Subtext and Book Creator to fully redefine your classroom literacy instruction and delivery methods. Digital book clubs allow for connected, flexible, and customized literacy instruction that engage all learners. Through reading digital novels, participating in online discussions, annotating text with categorical tags, and expressing ideas through transliteracy (multi-media tools), students will interact with the text, the teacher, and each other while receiving nearly instant, trackable feedback on their work. The Invisible iPad - Significant Learning Experiences Without Actually Losing Your iPad

Visual representations of knowledge, creativity and collaboration? Our challenge with technology such as the iPad is that because it has so much versatile functionality, the user is faced with a real dilemma of losing sight of what the tool is meant to accomplish. The importance is to focus less on how we are using iPads and Apps, and more on why we use them and what we are able to achieve through their use. When we are able to properly strategize our learning objectives and goals, the technology becomes secondary to meaningful learning outcomes; this is how how it becomes the Invisible iPad. This awareness enables students to become active and independent learners. When students are empowered to concretize their learning goals, and focus on a final learning product, only then can the technology become invisible allowing students to focus on success and excellence. Maker Mindset - It Is More Than Just the Cool Stuff!

When people think about Make, images of 3D printers and laser cutters come to mind. This preconception can often lead communities to mistakenly think that a Maker experience is out of reach for their students or users. However, Make is first and foremost a mindset and is accessible to learners of all ages and circumstances. Make grew out of the DIY movement and has morphed into DIT (together) or DIWO (with others), and a MakerSpace experience can start with whatever materials you gather from your own community with a focus on repurposing. Additionally, we can draw on the expertise of community members, and the abundance of √íhow to√ì videos on the internet or books available in the library, to learn how to do almost anything. I want to focus on the qualities that define a Maker Education/Experience, rather than the tools, to address any issues around access and equity that might arise for groups, regardless of financial and material resources. In this interactive session, we will unpack what these qualities mean and how they can be encouraged in individuals and spaces to help Make thrive anywhere. You have iPads. You’ve engaged in training. You are listening. You are inspired. You are reaching for redefinition on the SAMR scale. Nonetheless, you are overwhelmed. This session will lead the novice/intermediate user into a comfort zone by learning to set realistic expectations. From the trenches of a seasoned teacher, see examples of student work produced during the first year of implementation. You will gain a sense of how to balance your teaching: when to plan the technical skills learning curve, when to trust student intuition, when to expect technology to become invisible.

With student work from primarily 4 creation apps, (Explain Everything, iMovie, Book Creator, Draw and Tell), we will study the process from beginning to end. What really goes on in the classroom?
